NYCwireless

Ok, so it's not exactly crime/scary stuff related, but here's a big plug for NYCwireless. I'm sitting in a wet Bryant Park right now typing away, streaming music and getting email. What a wonderful city. But... why do I feel like someone's going to jump from behind this tree and kindly "ask" for my computer. Maybe this post is crime/scary stuff related.

Off-Duty Cop Nabbed For Exposure

(The link is going to change in a bit)

"An off-duty Queens cop was arrested on May 21 and charged with public lewdness, after a passerby spotted him masturbating while driving his car – slowly – along a busy Fresh Meadows highway."

Was he driving his car slowly or masturbating slowly?

Hamilton Beach Boardwalk Fence Zaps Passersby

"I get shocked all the time. It’s dangerous to walk through there. I wasn’t thinking the other day, and the train was coming by, and I put my hand on the fence and was knocked over," said a resident who alerted the Chronicle and did not want her name used.

New Yorkers Have Growing Pessimism About the City

I guess that's why I'm doing this. But it isn't crime that's making people feel down in the dumps about NY.

"Concerns about crime — historically a high priority among New Yorkers — have taken a back seat to the economy. Of those polled, 19 percent said they would like to see Mayor Bloomberg concentrate on unemployment, and only 5 percent wanted his attention turned to crime. In June 2002, 17 percent said they wanted the mayor to concentrate on crime, and only 6 percent called for a focus on unemployment."

Agile Suspect Arrested in Break-Ins

They think this is the guy that's been breaking into a bunch of homes on the Upper East and Upper West sides.

"In his backpack, police found a laptop, an adapter, a Palm Pilot and a bottle of white wine, a source said."

Life's necessities.

Queens soccer coach gets 66 years for abusing boys

"The coach of a Forest Hills soccer league was sentenced to up to 66 years in prison for sexually abusing six young boys during team trips that involved overnight stays at two Queens hotels, District Attorney Richard Brown announced last Thursday."

Interesting point made by defense attorney Martin Gedulig: "Some priests have been arrested and charged with certain similar crimes they carried out over several years, and their sentence was not over 20 years."

Arrest of top aide shocks NY Assembly

"The arrest of top Assembly aide Michael Boxley on rape charges cast a pall on the Legislature Thursday and left some wondering whether progress on outstanding issues could be slowed in the last days of the year’s session."

“The timing is awful. There’s a real impact potentially on legislation,” said Assemblywoman Sandra Galef, D-Ossining, Westchester County.

Yeah, Sandra. The timing is the only thing that's awful. Rape, schmape.

Bronx Woman Shot, Then Run Over

"A Bronx man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly shot his girlfriend, then ran over her with his van because he thought she was two-timing him with a man who had attacked her the night before."

The driver/shooter is," known as Spaghetti because of his thin build." A friend was later surprised to hear that Pitterson was accused of shooting Deacon and running over her with his van.

Oh yeah?

For Bloomberg, the Crime Rate Keeps Falling

Ok, so despite these posts, there's less crime in the city... again. But you still can't smoke in bars. Or sit on milk crates. Or have too many words on your awning. Or...

Teens Charged In Game Melee

"Five Brooklyn teenagers were indicted Thursday on attempted murder and other charges stemming from a bottle-throwing, bat-wielding and shooting rampage during a high school baseball game in Ridgewood."

You hear about this? Basically 15 kids ran onto a field in an effort to hurt members of one of the teams playing baseball. "Cap guys in white," they were heard saying.

Why am I doing this?

I heard someone speak today about blogs/bloggers/blogging. One of the things they said was, "you have to ask yourself why you're doing this. Why are you blogging?" It's something I've been thinking about since starting this a few weeks ago. Am I taking advantage of terrible situations? Not so sure.

I think I have the answer though, and I thought of this a few days ago. ScaryNY. I think over the last 1 year and 8 months (basically, since Sept. 11) people in NYC have been scared. Scared of more terrorism, more days like that tuesday. But I think things are changing. I think people are going back to being afraid of the standard stuff... you know, getting your wallet stolen, getting mugged, beaten up, etc.

Does that mean things are getting back to normal? Maybe, if you consider that normal. Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Cops: Phone Sex Predator Terrorized More Than 50 Kids

"A Brooklyn man made random telephone calls in hopes of finding children home alone, then terrorized them into sexual behavior by claiming he was watching from outside and would rape or kill them if they refused, officials said."

Kind of gives "trial" and error a new meaning, eh? What a dick.

House of horror

"A 13-year-old Queens boy came home from school yesterday and walked into a blood-soaked house of horrors, where his parents and aunt were found slain execution-style."
