Cargo Pants -- Not a Laughing Matter

Lots of posts about this today. Lots of "ha ha, cargo pants" type stuff.

Am I the only one that sees this as the first step towards a police state? Am I a little nuts? I might be. It just scares me a bit. Seriously. Cops have gone from friendly people in sensible slacks to fierce urban warriors in utilitarian garb.

Woman Killed in Dispute With In-Law

"A Queens woman with a history of mental illness allegedly hacked her elderly mother-in-law to death with a meat cleaver after the mother-in-law refused to give her rice, saying it would make the daughter-in-law fat, police said."

Thieves Take Figure of Jesus, but Not the Cross

"Who made off with Jesus? The question hung in the air of the Church of the Holy Cross in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday after caretakers noticed that a 200-pound plaster rendering of Christ had been removed from a wooden cross near the church's entrance."

This is just plain silly. Of all the stuff to steal, they run off with a 4' Jesus. TVs, cars, wallets. No, Jesus. "What Would Jesus Do" if he were Jesus Jacked?

Dust and Deception

"Last week a quietly scathing report by the inspector general of the Environmental Protection Agency confirmed what some have long suspected: in the aftermath of the World Trade Center's collapse, the agency systematically misled New Yorkers about the risks the resulting air pollution posed to their health. And it did so under pressure from the White House."

So you know all that dust in Lower Manhattan after Sept. 11th? Not so clean it turns out. At least the people of Wyoming are safe from terrorism.

Just a hunch, but I think people (journalists, opponents and voters) are going to start asking some of the serious questions that have been left unasked during the run up to Decision 2004.

Mayor Mobbed at Pakistani Parade

"As the parade started to move south on Madison Avenue at 42nd Street, Bloomberg was swamped by a flag-waving throng of friendly but forceful well-wishers who bulldozed his security detail, jostling the mayor."

Note to self: attend the Pakistani Parade next year. It sounds like a blast.

"'It's like this every time,' said Inderjit Singh, a Queens Democrat and City Council candidate who attends the parade every year. 'It's not very well organized.'"

Fun.

Attempted Robbery Ends As Stabbing

"An attempted robbery turned deadly in Washington Heights when a man was fatally stabbed after forcing another man into a car to rob him, police said."

This whole story would be more interesting if I could only understand it.

2 Wounded in Hoops Gunplay

"A gunman opened fire near a crowded Bronx basketball court yesterday after he and some pals got into a fight with players in a local tournament, leaving a teenage boy with life-threatening wounds, cops said."

The story goes on to say, "V-Kids organizer Joe Robinson, however, said the shooting had nothing to do with basketball."

Oh, good. Thank god. Because shooting someone over basketball is just dumb. So many better reasons to shoot someone. Yeah.
