L Train Fire

"I actually had no idea what was happening as I was engrossed in a heuristic dissection of 'And We Danced' by the Hooters, which happened to be playing on my iPod. But then, all of a sudden, I was nearly knocked off my feet by a stampede of people from the other side of the car. 'The train's on fire!'"

Two Jamaica men guilty in pushing LIC prostitution

"Two Jamaica men were convicted last week of promoting prostitution in Long Island City in an ongoing effort by law enforcement officials, said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown."

Ok, that's all well and good, but check this out:

"Both men were arrested after a seven-month investigation by the Police Department's Intelligence Division and the DA's Special Proceedings Bureau as part of an anti-prostitution enforcement initiative focused on Queens Plaza in Long Island City, Brown said."

7 months? I guess it was like this:

Undercover cop: "Yeah, Sarge. I asked this guy where to go, he pointed to a girl, I gave her money and she had sex with me."

Sarge: "Great. Good work. Book him."

Undercover cop: "I think I should go one more time just to be sure."

Sarge: "Good thinking."

Undercover cop: "Mind if I call a few friends in the DA's Special Proceedings Bureau? They could really use a good fuc.., er, investigation."

Scene repeats for 7 months.

FDNY Probies Arrested For Property Damage To Diner

"The North Shore Diner in Bayside was the scene of a food fight and worse on Monday as two probationary firefighters and their friend caused $500 worth of damage to the restaurant."

The lead is a lot more exciting than reality. A ketchup bottle was thrown. That's it.

Veteran Cop Charged With DWI

"A veteran NYPD captain was arrested and suspended after he crashed his personal car into a police car in Yonkers while driving drunk, authorities said Thursday."

Woops. I guess he gets to keep his car. Not all do.

Update: So some people didn't catch my drift here. What I meant to say is: some people get their cars confiscated after getting stopped for DWI. Not even convicted. Just suspected. My point was that this cop will probably get to keep his car because he's a cop. Fair? I'll leave that up to you.

Traffic Agent Attacked

[First one under "Bronx"]

"An on-duty traffic agent suffered a broken leg when she was punched, kicked and spat on while issuing a ticket on a Bronxdale street, police said yesterday."

She was just doing her job when, "The car's driver, Macario Quizhpi, 41, scrambled up to Holman, yelled at her and spit at her, hitting her in her face. He then elbowed her in the chest, punched her in the face and kicked her."

I assume he still got the parking ticket along with the assault, harassment, disorderly conduct and obstructing governmental administration charges.

Teen Killed In Subway Fall

"A teenage passenger trying to subway surf on a C train was killed Monday when he hit his head on a girder, plunged to the tracks in a Chelsea tunnel and was run over by another train, transit officials said."

Out of respect for this kid's family (something I don't always show), I'll reserve most of my comments on this story. But this isn't scary, it's just plain stupid and unlike a lot of the things I like to here, totally avoidable.

I work around the corner from this subway station and I use it frequently. Around 3 pm, a bunch of schools in the neighborhood are all let out at the same time and the streets are filled with students. The subway station usually has about 20 cops on the platform herding them onto trains to prevent fights and whatnot. They're not there to stop this sort of thing from happening, but it still surprises me that some people would try something like this.

City's driving toward a safety benchmark

Good news! You're less likely to get hit by a car and die on New York City streets.

"As of early October, there were 254 traffic fatalities in the city since Jan. 1, down nearly 10% from the same period last year."

This whole story is full of quotes from city officials that essentially sound as if they're saying, "we're please to see that less people are dying." It's weird, as if 254 is an acceptable number.

Fire on Brooklyn Ferry Forces Evacuation

"A fire on a Brooklyn ferry forced the evacuation of eight passengers and four crew members Monday morning, but there were no injuries, the Coast Guard said."

A bad few days for ferries.

Jewels Stolen, Officers Say, With a Hand From Inside

"When the police responded to an alarm at a jewelry store in Harlem on Saturday night, they found 16-year-old Farj Zaibak bound hand and foot with tape and $150,000 worth of jewelry missing, police officials said yesterday."

Ok, whatever. Not important. Instead, I'd like to focus on this one line from the story:

"Jou Jou is Farj's nickname, and the shop, which sells jewelry, gold teeth and cellular phones, typically stays open until 7:30 or 8 p.m. on Saturdays, the family said."

Did I read that right? I can get a pinky ring, a new tooth with my initials engraved in it and a Treo 600 all under one roof? As Yakov Smirnoff used to say, "I love America!"

Ex-Met's Series Rings Missing

"Former Mets first baseman Keith Hernandez's two World Series rings are missing from his midtown apartment, police said Saturday."

If it can happen to Keith, it can happen to you. So hold onto those World Series Rings of yours. Stay safe out there.

A third NYU suicide?

"A third NYU student apparently committed suicide last night at 10pm, jumping from another student’s sixth floor room at the 1 University Place apartments. The 19-year-old female from Brooklyn is the third NYU student to commit suicide in the past 5 weeks."

What's going on?
