deadly butt-leg war

"A bootleg cigarette war in Brooklyn has claimed the lives of at least three people since the summer, the Daily News has learned."

Some people have given up selling crack and the like in exchange for selling smokes on the streets. They used to say because it was safer, but who knows. For those keeping score, this wasn't a problem when cigarettes cost $2 a pack and you could smoke in bars.

Pet Store Shootings Appear Justified

"The owner of a Gravesend pet store that has been the target of several dog thefts, apparantly was justified when he fatally shot two robbers last night, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said today."

That's right, folks. Dog thefts. I had no idea.

"Another neighbor, who gave only his first name, Cesar, said: 'I guess he got tired of getting robbed. They keep going in there and stealing $1,000 dogs.'"

Computer blamed for all-hands blaze

"A fire that apparently began in a computer quickly erupted into an all-hands blaze in a West Brighton home yesterday."

Computers are dangerous. This family lost everything.

Queens Man Charged With Harassing Neighbor

"A Far Rockaway man once arrested in a racially charged case for donning a white hood and defacing property belonging to a neighbor who has black friends has been arrested again — this time on charges of trespassing on the neighbor's property, police said Tuesday."

What did he do?

"Murphy walked his dog, Mikey, on Guzzo's beachfront property two weeks ago, telling the dog to 'get 'em,' get the — — ,' Guzzo said. Both Murphy and his dog were filmed on Guzzo's security video cameras, Guzzo told police."

Any idea how you pronounce "— —?"

Tomorrow's Headline Today

"Some time between 2 and 5 today, an Astoria man ferociously beat an RCN support technician until his Web connection was restored."

I swear to God. If they don't fix my connection tomorrow, I'm going to go ape shit. Note: this is not a threat.

Boat's Here"A man said, 'The boat's here' - then jumped into the freezing waters of the East River at 34th Street yesterday morning, police said."

Is that a crime? Seriously?

Sharpton Settles Suit Against NYPD

"The city has agreed to pay Al Sharpton $200,000 in damages after he was stabbed nearly 13 years ago at a protest where he said police failed to protect him."

That will buy so many gold chains and running suits.

"Sharpton, who is running for president, said he still fears large crowds and has a one-inch scar on his chest after a drunken white man attacked him with a kitchen knife as he was preparing for a rally in Brooklyn."

Proportionally, a one-inch scar on Sharpton isn't really that big a deal.

Samurai slaying

"A naked, samurai sword-wielding martial arts expert screaming, 'I'm God! I'm immortal' hacked his wife to death yesterday in a blood-soaked Bronx rampage, police said."

Sex Offender Registry

"In order to search the Subdirectory of Level 3 Sex Offenders, please enter the following information…"

My ISP hasn't worked for the last week (RCN = Really Crappy Network), so I haven't been able to keep up on what's going down the past few days.

Anyway, search for Level 3 (the most dangerous) sex offenders in New York State. Search by name, county or zip code. They say my zip code has none, which I think is a load of crap. But whatever, take a look for yourself.

Note: you have to enter some personal info to get access to the database, but it's not like you gotta show ID or nothing if you know what I mean Mr. Joe Schmo of 123 Main Street, Anytown, NY.
