"A Manhattan woman was electrocuted in a freak dog-walking accident because utility workers failed to properly wrap an exposed wire one year earlier, Consolidated Edison announced Thursday after an internal probe."

Well negligence doesn't really make it a freak accident, does it? Rather than replacing an exposed wire last January, ConEd workers simply wrapped some electrical tape around it.

NYC Department of Records - Photo Gallery

Howard Sherman points to the "Crime and Criminals" section of the Municipal Photo Gallery (after he was pointed to it by the Manhattan User's Guide). Jeez, complicated. Anyway... some photos of criminals and crime scenes from years ago.

In happier civic photography news,'s Guide to Queens, NY, John Roleke, sends us to the NYC Municipal Archives for "photographs of every residence in Queens and all of NYC from 1939 to 1941." You have to pay a few bucks, but it sounds like it could be a cool housewarming gift.

Yeah, I was a little link happy in this post. Sue me.

City Sanitation Worker Killed in a Freakish Truck Accident

"A city sanitation worker died in a freakish accident in Brooklyn yesterday after she was pinned on top of a garbage truck by a mechanical lever, city officials said."

There's a reason why they call sanitation workers "New York's Strongest."

Queens Coyote Goes With Floe

"A not-so-wily coyote landed in the doghouse with would-be rescuers yesterday after getting cold feet and refusing to hop to safety from a floating chunk of ice in Jamaica Bay."

They make it seem like they got the coyote, but "Once on dry land, the coyote 'high-tailed it' into a wooded area, Ziel said."

So there's a coyote walking the mean streets of New York as I type, most likely assembling something or other from Acme Co., ready to unleash the contraption on the fine citizens of New York. Super. Beep beep.

SubText: [1] NYC Commuter "Tough"

"Truth is that almost all New Yorkers either look or TRY to look a little scary on the subway."

By the way... in case you haven't seen it, SubText is a moblog with images and text captured in the New York City Subway System. It's pretty cool.

Winter storms wallop Midwest, East

"Winter storms are glazing roads, delaying flights and causing deadly car crashes Tuesday throughout the Midwest and along the East Coast."

Run for your lives! It's going to snow! Forget the cat... get out of the city as soon as possible!

I love snow in the city, but I hate "the media's" reaction to it. Christ. It's just snow. Wear some boots, grow a pair and get over it.

I'm a Conspiracy Freak

Jan 25, 2004 12:42 pm US/Eastern: One Dead In Brooklyn Banquet Hall Shooting

"A man trying to break up a fight at a banquet hall in Brooklyn has been shot dead.

"It happened at about 4 a.m. at a Masonic temple in Broadway Juntion. Witnesses say a fight broke out early this morning at the Brooklyn Prince Hall Temple at 70 Pennsylvania Avenue. Someone pulled out a gun and three people were shot."

The story goes on, but that's pretty much it. Then, I see this today:

Jan 26, 2004 6:54 am US/Eastern: Gunplay Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Hurt At Brooklyn Club

"A 22-year-old man is dead and three other people are hurt after they were shot or stabbed at a social club in Brooklyn.

"Police say Blake Harper was pronounced dead at the scene early yesterday after he was shot once in the chest. The three people injured - two who were shot and one who was stabbed - were taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition."

The second story has more detail (go read it), but loses the mention of "Masonic temple."

Rat Trap

"A Bronx neighborhood group is using bacon, peanut butter and cheese to lure some ten thousand rats to their deaths within a month."

Can someone get pictures of this? Please? I'm imaging 10,000 hypnotized rats making their way towards their eventual death.

Officer Under Scrutiny Over NYC Shooting

"A grand jury this week will consider charges including murder against a police officer who fatally shot an unarmed teenager Saturday in the stairwell of a housing complex, law enforcement officials said."

The cop was patrolling a public housing rooftop when the shooting happened. The cop, with his gun already drawn, was opening a door when the victim was about to step through. The cop shot, the kid died.

The story mentions that it's not unusual for cops to walk around on roofs with their guns out.

"Adams said officers often encountered menacing dogs such as pit bulls on public housing rooftops where their owners had taken them to exercise. The encounters left officers fearful for their safety and may be why Neri had his gun drawn, Adams said."

Teen is stabbed in all-girl melee

"A long-simmering feud between teenagers erupted in violence yesterday when a schoolgirl wielding a kitchen knife stabbed another girl during a brawl in a Manhattan subway station, police said."

More crap involving school kids and subway stations. I've said it so many times before here, but I don't think there's a more frightening place than subway stations around 3 pm on weekdays.

"The violent outburst left yanked-off hair extensions and a scuffed neck brace lying near the token booth, and blood on turnstiles and the subway floor."

"Police said the station's token booth is staffed from 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., so no subway worker was around to call cops."

Wonder what the Straphangers Campaign thinks about that.

Friend's Injury Drains the Zaniness From a Race

"When Christopher Hackett failed to show up yesterday with the confetti gun that was to be fired to start the Idiot Race, a shopping cart chariot run of sorts, his Madagascar Institute colleagues used a bullhorn instead."

Here's an update to a story linked below. The confetti cannon guy with the pictures of the WTC and other "sensitive locations," whatever that means, was mixed up with the The Idiotarod race.

This NYT link won't expire thanks to a Rick Bruner tip.
